Kwara Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (KRUWASSA) was inaugurated through approval of the KRUWASSA Bill at the Kwara State House of Assembly.

All Local Governments are empowered to create Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) Departments
KRUWASSA - facilitates
  • Rural community development through provision of potable water
  • Reduced incidence of disease and mortality through provision of improved sanitation
  • Modern Hygiene in rural communities through education.
Kwara state has adequate water resources to meet the needs of its people however, most parts of the state have lacked safe sources of water supply in reality.

The majority of rural dwelling people (and some of the urban areas) have had to rely on streams and wells for their supply of water.


The UNICEF Assisted Kwara State Rural Water and Sanitation Project

The programme started in 1984 after an outbreak of Guinea Worm in Asa LGA of Kwara State.

The Guinea worm outbreak was so debilitating that farmers revenue that year depreciated markedly. The UAP decided to counteract this attack with provision of potable water, Hygiene education and treatment of cases found. .
